Family calls and voice memos are recorded and transcribed, and each kept call story is matched to the second it was told. Beside each kept story the book prints a small code; any phone plays their voice telling exactly that story.

Their voice

The weekly call is the richest hour of the week, and it is the one part of a mission that leaves nothing behind. When it ends, the way they told that story is gone, and no one can recover a call that was never recorded.

  • The recording is never cut. Where the story's words can be placed on the recording, the player seeks to its second and pauses at its end; where they cannot, it opens the call from the start rather than guess. Either way the whole call stays one file, one tap away.
  • Printed codes never seal. Media a printed code points at is exempt from storage tiering, whatever plan the family is on.
  • The archive refuses to delete anything a code points at: a call with kept moments, a book-chosen video, or a voice-journal entry with audio.
  • No login to listen. The listen route is public; the signed link is the key, and one link opens exactly one moment.
  • Only what a parent keeps ever prints or plays. Unkept moments are private review items; both the book renderer and the listen page check kept_at.

How it works

Call home the way you always have

Use the family's permanent call link; the recording, transcript and moments arrive on their own. For WhatsApp, Messenger or a phone call, put it on speakerphone and press Record in the app. The audio is kept, transcribed with timestamps.

Keep the moments worth hearing again

The biographer reads the transcript and proposes moments, each shown with the exact words behind it and flagged if it sounds private. Nothing reaches the book until you press Keep. A kept story is matched to the second it was told whenever its words can be placed on the recording with confidence — and never guessed at when they cannot.

The book prints a small code beside the story. Any phone opens it, no account needed. Playback opens where the story begins and pauses just after its last word, with one tap to keep listening to the whole call — and when the words cannot be placed on the recording confidently, the code opens the call from the start rather than guess.

What ends up in the book

  • Beside each call's summary, a small code for every kept moment, labeled with its title and "Hear them tell it · 23:14" — the book prints your missionary's own pronoun.
  • Beside a day-to-day journal entry the missionary dictated, the transcript on the page and a code reading "Hear this entry in their own voice" — printed with your missionary's pronoun.
  • A "Moving pictures" section in each area's chapter — Watch-it codes for the videos you chose, under the caption you gave them. The recording of the mission call opening gets the same block in Part I, Before the Mission, since video cannot print.
  • The words stay on the page regardless. The call summary and the journal entry print in full; the code adds the voice, it does not replace the text.
  • Sealed spiritual-journal entries never carry a code. If the missionary approves one from behind their PIN, its words print in the book — the recording itself never travels by code.

Questions

Does our missionary have to do anything?
No. They call home as they always have; the archive keeps the call. For a voice journal, they record a memo on their phone and email it to their own journal address. It comes back transcribed for a one-tap approval. They never log in.
Who can scan the codes?
Anyone holding the book. No account, no app, no password. The printed link is itself the key: one code opens exactly that story and nothing else in the archive. The full call is one tap further, if the listener wants it.
Will the codes still work in twenty years?
Letters, chats, transcripts and the book stay readable free forever. Photos, audio and video stay live through the mission and six months after; without a vault they may move to sealed, restorable storage. Anything a printed code points at is exempt: it never seals, and the archive refuses to delete it.
What about the private things said on a call?
Every proposed moment shows the actual words behind it, and anything that sounds like someone else's business is flagged before you decide. Nothing reaches the archive, followers or the book until you press Keep. Their sealed spiritual journal never travels by code at all; only they can share an entry, from behind their PIN.
